The margins vs the funnel

There’s a main path that runs through our local park that gets you through from end to end and onto the next form of transit or direct route home. The dog and I tend to use it because it’s leading us to.

Today we veered off and meandered among the greenery, to the outer edges and the wide open spaces for throwing the ball. There’s nothing that tells us we can’t, but it still felt like an act of will to go there.

So much of the world is leading us on a path not of our deliberate choosing. Sometimes this is beneficial, as with smart controls for movement at train stations, but often, via everything from social media algorithms to the career ladder, we’re being funnelled. There’s not enough room at the bottom, so I’m looking out for everyone sticking to the margins.
